The miracle of honey as an alternative medicine

Introduction

Honey is a sweet and viscous fluid produced by honeybees from the nectar of flowers. "The definition of honey stipulates a pure product that does not allow for the addition of any other substance. This includes, but is not limited to, water or other sweeteners," according to the United States National Honey Board 2003 and other nations' food regulations. Honey is significantly sweeter than table sugar and has attractive chemical properties for baking. Honey has a distinctive flavor which leads some people to prefer it over sugar and other sweeteners.

Liquid honey does not spoil. Because of its high sugar concentration, it kills most bacteria by crenation. Natural airborne yeasts cannot become active in it because the moisture content is too low. Natural, raw honey varies from 14% to 18% moisture content. As long as the moisture content remains under 18%, virtually no organism can successfully multiply to significant amounts in honey, though, importantly, enough bacteria survive to make honey dangerous for infants (especially Clostridium botulinum).

The study of pollens and spores in raw honey (melissopalynology) can determine floral sources of honey. Because bees carry an electrostatic charge, and can attract other particles, the same techniques of melissopalynology can be used in area environmental studies of radioactive particles, dust, or particulate pollution.

A main effect of bees collecting nectar to make honey is pollination, which is crucial for flowering plants.

Islam and honey

More than 1400 years ago Allah and His messenger told us that honey can heal a variety of medical problems.

Allah Says (what means): "And the Lord inspired the bee, saying: Take your habitations in the mountains and in the trees and in what they erect. Then, eat of all fruits and follow the ways of your Lord made easy (for you)'. There comes forth from their bellies a drink of varying colors wherein is healing for men. Verily in this is indeed a sign for people who think." [Quran 16:68-69]

The Prophet has also told us of the healing found within honey for a variety of medical problems, including stomach ailments. It is reported by Al-Bukhaari that a man came to the Prophet because his brother had a stomach disorder. The Prophet said: "Let him drink honey." The man returned a second time complaining that no improvement happened in his brother's case, and again the Prophet responded: "Let him drink honey." The man returned again, and said: "I have done that but to no avail." Thereupon the Prophet responded: "Allah has said the truth, but your brother's stomach has told a lie. Let him drink honey." He drank it and was cured.

It is also reported that the Prophet said: "Make use of the two remedies: honey and the Quran." (At-Tirmithi)

Modern medicine has only recently discovered the fact that honey is a remedy to many diseases. Traditional uses of honey have included honey mixed with lemon for sore throats. Honey coats the throat and reduces throat irritation. Research has already shown that honey blocks the growth of oral bacteria.

Honey has also been used for stomach pains and problems. Modern research shows that honey is effective when used in the treatment of gastric or peptic stomach ulcers. Research has also revealed that honey is effective in the treatment of various wounds and infections because of its antimicrobial (antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal) properties.

Researchers are not absolutely sure why honey heals but they are learning new things about honey everyday. As mentioned in the beginning, honey contains a variety of sugars and minerals. Honey is also considered an antioxidant. This means it allows the blood to circulate better and provide more oxygen to areas of the body such as the brain.

Honey can also be used externally to promote healing when applied to wounds, even postoperative wounds. Honey has also been effective in its use to treat burns. It has even been shown to be low in calories and useful as a sweetener for diabetics, people with heart disease or those overweight.

Although there is healing in honey for a variety of medical disorders, certain precautions should be taken:

1- Children under the age of one year should not be given honey due to the possibility of infant botulism. This type of food poisoning can be deadly, however, it only seems to affect infants under one year of age.

2- If you have any known allergies to specific plants, then you should make sure the honey you are using is not produced from that plant.

3- People with allergies to bee stings should be careful when using other bee-related products such as propolis or royal jelly.

However, if these precautions are followed, then honey may, Allah willing provide healing for you.

Conclusion

Muslims acknowledge and accept that Allaah and His Prophet know better and that our Creator Has revealed the truth. Therefore, we study the research that is available, not to confirm or deny the truth that has been revealed by Allaah and his Prophet but to learn of new ways we can use honey.

Honey is a sweet treat. In fact, it is man's oldest sweetener. It can be a good substitute for sugar in our drinks and food. But it is also good for many other things and treating many other conditions. Reliance on commercialized medicines which contains too much chemicals can become hazardous to our health. Alhamdullilah, Allah has given us the knowledge that Mother Nature can at least help to ease the pain we are suffering from.

Honey is composed of sugars like glucose and fructose and minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium chlorine, sulphur, iron and phosphate. It contains vitamins B1, B2, C, B6, B5 and B3 all of which change according to the qualities of the nectar and pollen. Besides the above, copper, iodine, and zinc exist in it in small quantities. Several kinds of hormones are also present in it.

Approximately one half of the human diet is derived directly or indirectly from crops pollinated by bees. Today honeybees are an essential part of a healthy agriculture economy. If you have allergies, honey can be beneficial. If you eat honey that is local to your area, it may prevent your seasonal allergies. Bees use the pollen from local plants and eventually it ends up in your honey.

Honey may also be good for your skin. It has the ability to attract water. You can use honey instead of alpha hydroxy masks because of its high content of the acid. It is also safe for sensitive skin.

You can also use it as a moisturizing mask for your skin as well as your hair. To use it as a conditioner, mix the honey with olive oil. Be sure to wash your hair thoroughly before you go outside.

If you have a sore throat, take some honey.Due to its natural anti-inflammatory effect, it will help to heal the wounds more quickly.It also has different phytochemicals--chemicals found in plants and different foods--that kill viruses, bacteria, and fungus making it a good substitute for wound dressings. The taste may also take your mind off the pain.

There is evidence that honey diluted in water will help with your stomachaches and dehydration.

Germ-Fighting Properties

How Does It Help In Healing Wounds?

When honey comes into contact with body moisture, the glucose oxidase enzyme introduced to the honey by the bee slowly releases the antiseptic hydrogen peroxide at a sufficient level to be effective against bacteria but not tissue damaging. Not only is honey anti-bacterial, it also draws body fluids and nutrients to the area and so assists cell growth and prevents a scar forming by drying out of the wound.

The osmotic action of the honey draws out and provides a film of liquid between the tissues and the dressing, allowing the dressing to be removed painlessly, without tearing of the re-growing cells. There are reports in medical journals of large bed sores, otherwise needing skin grafts, that have healed without scarring after honey treatment.

In treating diarrhea, honey promotes the rehydration of the body and more quickly clears up the diarrhea and any vomiting and stomach upsets. The anti-bacterial properties of honey, both the peroxide and non-peroxide, are effective in the laboratory against MRSA strains of bacteria which are notoriously resistant to antibiotics and are sometimes responsible for the closing of hospital wards.

A Cure for all Mankind

Amongst the many creatures Allah has created in this world, there is a creature in which Allah Taala’s bounty is clearly evident, the honeybee. Allah Taa’la has enabled the honeybee to produce such a substance within which there is a cure for all mankind. Regarding the honeybee, Allah Taa’la says in the Glorious Qur’an:

“And your Lord inspired the bee, saying, ‘take your habitations in the mountains and in the trees and in what they erect. Then, eat of all fruits, and follow the way of your Lord made easy (for you).’ There comes forth from their bellies, a drink of varying colour wherein is healing for men. Verily, in this is indeed a sign for people who think.”

In this verse, we learn of one great benefit of honey for mankind; The ability to heal. Another astonishing factor in honey is that it varies in colour and viscosity in accordance with conditions such as the climate and the type of Nectar, etc. This is significantly different to fresh milk which does not vary in colour or viscosity due to changes in the animal’s provision or weather conditions.

In a Hadith, Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood has reported Allah’s Messenger as saying:

“Make use of two remedies, Honey and Qur’an.”

Honey has been useful both as food and medicine. Honey has been produced by bees from nectar. It contains a unique combination of sugars, acids, minerals, enzymes, vitamins, and flavour to make it one of the best foods as well as one of the most easily digested and highly acceptable materials known to man.

Some of the benefits which honey gives to its consumers are mentioned below:

And to sum up everything, honey is a blessed Sunnah of our beloved Prophet . This is known to us from a narration by Hazrat Aisha , who says:

“The Prophet loved sweet and honey.”

May Allah Taa’la bestow upon us all the ability to utilise honey, so that we can fully benefit from all of its properties and act upon the Sunnah of Nabi .

The honey bee exhibits a combination of individual traits and social co-operation which is unparalleled in the animal kingdom. A glimpse into the nest makes it apparent why honey bees have fascinated us from the earliest days of scientific observations. The infrastructure of the nest, the perfectly uniform and functional comb, is composed of beeswax and is constructed into a repeating series of almost perfect hexagonal cells.

At the individual level, honey bees have not one but three types of colony members: queens, drones and workers, each with their own specialisations and place in honey bee society. The queen reigns over the nest, surrounded by attendants and fed the rich food she requires to perform her few but crucial tasks in the colony. The queen produces powerful pheromones, chemical signals to recipient workers which control many of their behaviours and provide part of the 'social glue' which holds honey bee life together. A highly organised social structure exists within the colony and elaborate 'dances' are used to communicate the location of food sources.

The products of the hive are important to the modern agricultural system. Not only do honey bees provide us with honey, wax, propolis, royal jelly and pollen but they also pollinate a good portion of our crops, including such diverse agricultural plants as fruit trees, oilseeds, small berries and forage crops.

Honey is a remarkable viscous liquid, prepared by the bees from the nectars of various plants. It has occupied a prominent place in traditional medicines throughout world history. The ancient Egyptians, Assyrians, Chinese, Greeks and Romans employed honey for wounds and diseases of the gut. When the Children of Israel were in Egypt or journeying through the desert, their promised goal was a 'land flowing with milk and honey'.

Both the holy Qur'an and Hadith refer to honey as a healer of disease.

'And thy Lord taught the bee to build its cells in hills, on trees and in (men's) habitations..... there issues from within their bodies a drink of varying colours, wherein is healing for mankind. Verily in this is a Sign for those who give thought'. (Translation of Quran 16:68-69)

In addition, the Prophet (PBUH) said:

'Honey is a remedy for every illness and the Qur'an is a remedy for all illness of the mind, therefore I recommend to you both remedies, the Qur'an and honey.'(Bukhari)

The reader may be surprised to learn that the above quotation from the Qur'an is mentioned in a well known encyclopedia on honey (reference 3).

In recent years, scientific support is beginning to emerge confirming the beneficial effects of honey on certain medical and surgical conditions. These effects may be summarised as follows:

Antibacterial and antifungal properties

These properties of honey are well established. Undiluted honey inhibits the growth of bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, certain gut pathogens and fungi such as Candida albicans. At a concentration of 30-50%, honey has been shown to be superior to certain conventional antibiotics in treating urinary tract infections. The exact mechanism of the anti-microbial effect of honey remains obscure. Low pH, osmotic disruption of pathogens and thepresence of bactericidal substances, collectively called inhibine may all play a part.

Anti-diarrhoeal properties

At a concentration of 40%, honey has a bactericidal effect on various gut bacteria known to cause diarrhoea and dysentery such as Salmonella, Shigella, enteropathogenic E. coli and Vibrio cholera. In one study, honey given with oral rehydration fluid was shown to reduce the duration of bacterial diarrhoea in infants and children.

Wound-healing and anti-inflammatory properties

Honey is of value in treating burns, infected surgical wounds and decubitus ulcers. Honey is very viscous, enabling it to absorb water from surrounding inflamed tissue. For example, a study in West Africa showed that skin grafting, surgical debridement and even amputation were avoided when local application of honey to wound promoted healing, whereas conventional treatment failed.

In another study, wound healing was accelerated by application of honey in women who had undergone radical vulvectomy for vulval cancer. Also, it has been suggested that honey may be useful in the treatment of chronic, foul smelling ulcers seen in leprosy.

Anti-tussive and expectorant properties

These anti-cough properties of honey are related to its capacity to dilute bronchial secretions and improve the function of the bronchial epithelium.

Nutritional properties

Uncontaminated honey is a healthy, easily digestible, natural and energy rich food. It contains carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, enzymes and vitamins. One tablespoon of honey provides 60 calories and contains 11g of carbohydrates, 1mg of calcium, 0.2mg of iron, 0.lmg of vitamin B and 1mg of vitamin C.

Honey is widely available in most communities but its medical potential remains grossly underutilised. Its mode of action remains incompletely understood and the healing properties of honey in other clinical and laboratory situations requires further evaluation. The miraculous beneficial properties of honey, so beautifully ex-pressed in the holy Qur'an and Sunnah 14 centuries ago expose the reluctance of modern science to accept and exploit this 'traditional remedy'.

Honey the antibiotic of the future

In the Qur'an, Allah says that in paradise will be "rivers of honey pure."

"Then to eat of all the produce (of the earth), and find with skill the spacious paths of its Lord: there issues from within their bodies a drink of varying colors, wherein is healing for men: verily in this is a Sign for those who give thought"(16:69).

Although honey's healing benefits were known to Muslims more than a thousand years ago, scientists are just now beginning to research it's amazing powers. Indeed, Peter Molan, biochemist at the University of Waikato (New Zealand) has - for the past 17 years - researched into the healing properties of honey and has shown scientifically that all honeys have varying degrees of such properties (Molan, p.1). Honey contains many minerals and vitamins beneficial to man. However, one of the most important properties seems to be its antibiotic action.

Each drop of honey contains many minerals ( potassium, sodium, phosphate, copper, iron, calcium, manganese ), enzymes, trace elements, vitamins (A, B1, B2, B3, C, D, K), as well as beta-carotene . Honey also contains glucose, fructose and saccharine (70%) and is very preservative just by itself (billybee.com). Of course honey from a supermarket, which has been heated and filtered, may not be as therapeutic as one taken directly from the comb (Ifas, p.4).

Molan's favorite story about honey makes reference to a 20-year-old wound in a British woman. Bacteria had been festering in an abscess in her armpit for years, resisting all the antibiotics she had taken. Nothing seemed to help her and she could barely use her arm. In August 1999, she heard about honey's healing effects and convinced her doctors to put some in her dressing. At that point they were willing to try anything and were not very hopeful that anything would work. However, they were quite surprised when one month later the wound finally healed and the woman could use her arm again.

Since then, honeys have been tested on the different species of bacteria responsible for wound infection (Molan, p.2). The State Medical Society of Wisconsin announced," It is only a matter of time before antibiotics lose their effectiveness because their overuse creates ever-stronger germs."

Thus, we may have to go back to the to the old fashioned remedy. However, "old fashioned", is not as bad as it sounds. Effectively, the potency of honey was found to be superior to all types of antibiotics. Two years ago, Australia approved honey as a medicine and began selling it in pharmacies (Whichman, p.1).

Honey is now known for its antibiotic, antioxidant and antiviral capabilities. In fact, honey contains an enzyme that produces hydrogen peroxide, which is believed to be the main reason for its anti-microbial activity. If one wants to use it as a dressing, the best way is to use sterilized honey. However, the only way to sterilize honey without destroying its antibacterial agents is through gamma-irradiations. Honey is also used for sore throats, colds, heartburn, fever blisters, cuts, acne, skin disorders, ulcers, stomach inflammations and cataracts… and its flavor excites the appetite (The National Honey Board).

The advantage of the honey used externally is that during the healing process the re-growth of the sick part of the body is enhanced by honey's moisturizing properties. Molan explains the mechanism of this process:

1. The nectar, being made of glucose and fructose, is very attracted by water. When put on a wound, it absorbs water and body fluids, taking and destroying bacteria and inhibiting their growth too.

2. Raw honey contains glucose oxidase, an enzyme that produces a mild antiseptic when mixed with a bit of water. This enzyme is destroyed by heat and pasteurization. That is why it cannot be found in commercial honeys (Molan, p.3)

Of course raw, unprocessed honey, which is usually darker, has the most medicinal and nutritional value and is even the most flavorful. Particularly active, Manuka Honey from New Zealand has all the healing antibacterial properties of other honeys, with some additional components. "All honey is not created equal, however certain types such as "active" Manuka from New Zealand and perhaps Honeydew from Central Europe are more effective for infections," says Molan (Molan, p.2).

While the healing properties of honey may be news to modern science, Prophet Mohammad (saws) commented on its value 1400 years ago. Indeed, once a man came to the Prophet and said, "My brother has got loose motions." The Prophet said to him, "Let him drink honey (Bukhari)." Furthermore, the work of Molan has provided substantial evidence that honey holds promise in the treatment of peptic ulcers and upper gastroenteritis disorders. Despite its high acid concentration, the nectar is very digestible and tones the kidneys.

The Prophet (saws) also said, "If there is any healing in your medicines, then it is in cupping, a gulp of honey or branding with fire (cauterization) that suits the ailment, but I don't like to be (cauterized) branded with fire." Indeed, honey also nourishes, regulates and purifies blood circulation. Its fructose is the only natural inert sugar and it goes straight into the blood, nourishing nerves and providing the brain with extra energy.

In case of first-degree burns, "the raw wild flower honey formed a flexible protective barrier which prevents infections, absorbs pus and reduced pain, irritation and odor" writes Leigh Broadhurst (Healthwellexchange.com). A Romanian doctor stated that he tried honey on cataract patients, and 2002 of his 2094 patients recovered completely (Islamweb.net).

Another function has been found for honey too: an Oklahoma allergist has said that raw honey is an excellent treatment for 90% of all allergies. A person who is suffering from an allergy to a certain plant should eat honey made from this plant (Reallyrawhoney.com).

Honey can also help heal Tinea, for it has anti-fungal activities; but not many species of fungi have been tested. Mycoses are quite difficult to treat, for they need both anti-fungal and antibacterial treatment. However, Manuka honey showed that its hydrogen peroxide factors inhibit the growth of fungi. Although, the concentration of honey needed to treat Mycoses is higher than that needed to treat bacteria (Molan, p.3).

However, paradoxical, sweet honey can also protect the teeth. Its anti-microbial activity has been tested on several species of dental plaque bacteria. A study shows that honey has been proven to sharply reduce acid production, thus killing the bacteria responsible for dental caries. Researchers believe that it also makes a difference in fighting inflammatory infections of the gums (Cbshealthwatch.com).

One Companion of the Prophet reported, "In our holy battles, we used to get honey (Bukhari)." According to what we now know, this was a logical choice for travelers and soldiers, as honey is a supersaturated sugar and is easy to digest because of the monosaccharides; it is also a superior antibiotic. The natural carbohydrates contained within honey, when combined with proteins, help maintain a good glycaemia - which is important for recovering after a hard-days efforts. By maintaining a good glucose level, honey also maintains a good insulin level and helps people to avoid hypoglycemia. Some studies showed that this nectar could thus boost endurance performance in athletes (Cbshealthwatch.com).

However, although honey is a very safe and natural remedy, it should not be given to infants under one year-old. Honey is a source of bacteria spores that product a toxin which can cause infant botulism, even though it is rare (a risk of botulism exists in the ingestion of any uncooked food!). Botulism is a rare disease that affects the nervous system and can lead to palsy. Nevertheless, it can still be use as a dressing for burns and cuts (Manukahoneyusa.com).

"And your Lord taught the honey bee…" (16:68). This verse explains the excessive production of the bees. They have been taught to produce not only for themselves but also for human beings! The excellent organization within the hive is also proof of this "teaching."

So, honey should be the first choice in cases of health problems as it is natural and has a high nutrient value; it does not have the side effects of drugs and is more affordable than most other kinds of therapy.

More than 1,400 years ago Allah and His messenger sallallahu aleyhe wa sallam (peace be upon him), told us that honey can heal a variety of medicinal problems.

Allah says in the Quran, "And the lord inspired the bee, saying: Take your habitations in the mountains and in the trees and in what they erect. Then, eat of all fruits and follow the ways of your Lord made easy (for you)'. There comes forth from their bellies a drink of varying colour wherein is healing for men. Verily in this is indeed a sign for people who think." [Qur'an 16:68-69]

The Prophet, sallallahu aleyhe wa sallam (peace be upon him), has also told us of the healing found within honey for a variety of medical problems, including stomach ailments. One hadeeth, reported by Bukhari, states that a man came to the Prophet , sallallahu aleyhe wa sallam (peace be upon him), because his brother had a stomach disorder. The Prophet said "Let him drink honey." The man returned a second time and again the Prophet , sallallahu aleyhe wa sallam (peace be upon him), responded again, "Let him drink honey." The man returned again, and said "I have done that." The Prophet then responded, "Allah has said the truth, but your brother's stomach has told a lie. Let him drink honey." He drank it and was cured.

Tirmithi, Ibn Majah and Baihaqi also reported that the Prophet, sallallahu aleyhe wa sallam (peace be upon him), said, "Make use of the two remedies: honey and the Quran."

Modern medicine is only just learning of this fact. Traditional uses of honey have included honey mixed with lemon for sore throats. Honey coats the throat and reduces throat irritation. Research has already shown that honey blocks the growth of oral bacteria. Honey has also been used for stomach pains and problems. Modern research shows that honey is effective when used in the treatment of gastric or peptic stomach ulcers. Research has also revealed that honey is effective in the treatment of various wounds and infections because of its antimicrobial (antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal) properties.

Researchers are not absolutely sure why honey heals but they are learning new things about honey everyday. We do know that honey contains a variety of sugars and minerals. Honey is also considered an antioxidant. This means it allows the blood to circulate better and provide more oxygen to areas of the body such as the brain. Honey can also be used externally to promote healing when applied to wounds, even postoperative wounds. Honey has also been effective in its use to treat burns. It has even been shown to be low in calories and useful as a sweetener for diabetics, people with heart disease or those overweight.

Although there is healing in honey for a variety of medical disorders, certain precautions should be taken. Children under the age of one year never be given honey due to the possibility of infant botulism. This type of food poisoning can be deadly, however, it only seems to affect infants under one year of age. Also, if you have any known allergies to specific plants, then you should make sure the honey you are using is not made from that plant. People with allergies to bee stings should be careful when using other bee-related products such as propolis or royal jelly. If these precautions are followed, then honey may provide healing for you.

As Muslims, we must acknowledge and accept that Allah and His Prophet, sallallahu aleyhe wa sallam (peace be upon him), know better and have revealed the truth. We should, therefore, study the research that is available, not to confirm or deny the truth that has been revealed by Allah and his Prophet, sallallahu aleyhe wa sallam (peace be upon him), but to learn of new ways we can use honey.

MADU YAMAN DIIKTIRAF SEBAGAI MADU TERBAIK DI DUNIA. (Diterjemah dari buku arab - Sejarah hasil bumi Yaman)

Sejak berjuta tahun dahulu, Yaman terkenal kerana madunya yang sangat baik dan berkualiti. ‘Erathostenes’ seorang sejarawan, berkata Yaman adalah satu kawasan yang amat subur dan mempunyai tempat-tempat yang sangat sesuai untuk penghasilan madu kerana terdapat pohon ‘Sidr’ dan ‘Sumur’. Madu yang dianggap paling baik adalah yang dikeluarkan dari bunga ‘Sidr’ (Ziziphus Spina Christi, L.Willd) dan ‘Sumur’ (Acacia Tortillis, Forsk. Hayne).

Penternakan lebah telah berkembang luas di lembah-lembah di Timur Yaman sebelum kedatangan Islam lagi. Buktinya dapat dilihat dari lukisan-lukisan di atas batu yang masih terdapat di kawasan itu. Antara gambar yang dapat dilihat dari lukisan ini ialah sekumpulan lebah sedang berterbangan. Dari gambar ini, dapat diterjemahkan bahawa sejak dahulu lagi, penduduk Yaman telah menternak lebah dan pada ketika itu, madu yang terhasil dinilaikan sebagai suatu yang amat berharga dan oleh kerana itulah mereka melukis gambar-gambar ini.

Al-Hamdani seorang sejarawan arab memberitahu, lereng-lereng gunung Hinwam, satu daerah yang didiami oleh puak Ahnum (Hamdan) adalah antara kawasan bumi Allah yang terkaya dengan lebah dan madu. Seorang penternak sahaja boleh memiliki sehingga lima puluh Jibh (sarang lebah) atau lebih.

Malangnya tidak ada maklumat khusus mengenai madu Yaman yang diberikan oleh Yusuf bin Omar.Catatan sejarah pada zaman Rasul walaupun tidak menyebut lebah telah mencatatkan hari-hari yang terbaik untuk mengumpul pelbagai jenis madu Yaman.

Menurut seorang sejarawan Mesir al-Maqrizi (meninggal pada 1441H) yang juga merupakan seorang pengarang beberapa perjanjian Arab mengenai penternakan lebah, menyatakan bahawa seluruh Yaman merupakan bumi lebah.

Lebah Yaman berbeza dengan lebah dari luar. Lebah Yaman diklasifikasikan sebagai ‘APIS MELLIFERA YEMENITICA’. Lebah-lebah Yaman ini tidak agresif dan mempunyai saiz badan yang lebih kecil berbanding dengan lebah Eropah, ‘APIS MELLIFERA EROPAH’ yang menzahirkan belang-belang kelabu pada bahagian badan. Ciri-ciri lebah Yaman ini menjadikannya sesuai dengan iklim di negara itu sehinggakan dari tinjauan yang dibuat mendapati lebah-lebah Yaman ini tidak terkena penyakit. Teknik-teknik penternakan lebah dan pengeluaran madu di sini sebahagian besarnya masih lagi menggunakan cara tradisional walaupun telah banyak negara-negara pengeluar madu menggunakan cara yang moden. Ini adalah kerana cara moden menyebabkan banyak khasiat-khasiat semulajadi, khasiat-khasiat perubatan dan lain-lain luput dari madu tersebut.

Sekumpulan lebah di Wadi Dau’an ditangkap untuk dikenal pasti dan dipilih ratu-ratu lebah tersebut. Kemudian, setiap seekor dari ratu tersebut akan diletakkan di dalam sebuah kotak kecil yang dibuat khas untuk ratu lebah tersebut. Kotak itu kemudiannya akan dimasukkan ke dalam satu tikar anyaman. Di dalam tikar tersebut terdapat rotan yang dibentuk mengikut bentuk sarang lebah dan ditutup di salah satu penghujungnya. Lebah-lebah pekerja yang lain kemudian akan mengikut ratu masing-masing masuk ke dalam sarang buatan yang tersedia itu.-W.H.Ingrams, ‘Tradistional Bee-Keeping in Wadi Dau’an’, Man 37 (1937), 32.

Pada asasnya, terdapat tiga jenis sarang lebah tradisional iaitu khaliyya (batang kayu yang kosong ditengah), jamak (sarang daripada tanah) dan khalaya (sarang daripada bakul rotan). Sarang-sarang ini ditutup pada setiap penghujungnya. Kemudian lubang dibuat bagi memudahkan lebah-lebah tersebut keluar masuk.

Terdapat dua cara penternakan lebah yang diamalkan di sini. Yang pertama penternakan setempat dan yang kedua ialah penternakan berpidah-randah. Penternakan setempat dilakukan dengan cara sarang-sarang lebah diletakkan samada di atas tanah atau di atas bumbung-bumbung rumah. Manakala penternakan pindah-randah yang banyak terdapat di kawasan timur menggunakn sarang berasaskan kayu. Sarang kayu lebih kuat dan stabil dan digunakan agar lebah tidak terganggu apabila diangkut dari satu lembah ke satu lembah di atas lori kecil. Dahulu unta-unta digunakan sebagai pengangkutan, madu yang terhasil diisi di dalam kulit-kulit kambing dan disimpan di dalam labu. Apabila sarang lebah tersebut telah dipenuhi dengan madu, penternak akan memotong isi sarang itu dengan pisau. Sedikit madu ditinggalkan di dalam sarang bagi memenuhi keperluan lebah pada musim kemarau.

Penternak di daerah Zabid memiliki dua hingga tiga sarang setiap keluarga berbeza dengan penternak-pentenak lebah professional di lembah-lembah selatan Wadi Hadramaut yang mempunyai hingga seratus unit setiap keluarga.

Di Yaman, madu telah digunakan untuk meletakkan satu cap mohor ke atas penyelesaian perbalahan dan cagaran dalam membuat perjanjian-perjanjian antara ahli-ahli kabilah. Memiliki madu yang dihasilkan di tempat sendiri merupakan satu simbol status kerana penduduk Yaman berbangga dengan kualiti madu mereka yang baik. Pada zaman Yaman moden pula, penduduk di sini menghidangkan madu kepada para tetamu yang bertandang ke rumah mereka. Madu juga selalu dihidangkan dalam jamuan-jamuan dan keramaian. Madu dicampur dengan telur dianggap penting untuk kesuburan dan kekuatan fizikal. Oleh kerana itu ia diberikan kepada pengantin-pengantin lelaki dan juga kepada kanak-kanak lelaki yang berkhatan.

Kaedah perubatan tradisi Yaman menyampurkan madu dengan mentega cair untuk diberikan kepada ibu-ibu sebaik sahaja selepas bersalin. Madu juga digunakan secara meluas dalam menghasilkan ubat-ubatan tradisional. Contohnya seperti madu dicampurkan dengan labu pahit kemenyan menjadi penawar mujarab bagi sembelit, madu dicampurkan dengan biji lobak menjadi penguat tenaga batin, madu dicampurkan dengan hiltit (sejenis perekat perubatan Asa Feotida) dapat membantu melancarkan perjalanan haid dan dengan beberapa jenis tumbuhan ia boleh merawat penyakit gila babi.

Rasa madu Yaman berbeza dengan rasa madu yang diimport dari negara lain. Madu Yaman juga dapat dibezakan dan juga dikenal pasti asal daerahnya dari warna dan bau. Darjah kelembapan dan kepekatan ekoran darin peratusan air adalah sangat penting dalam menentukan gred sesuatu jenis madu itu.

MADU LEBAH DAN KEISTIMEWAANNYA

Allah s.w.t. telah menciptakan sekalian makhlukNya dan memudahkan untuk mereka barang apa yang diperlukan oleh mereka untuk meneruskan kehidupan. Di antara ribuan makhluk ini, Allah s.w.t. telah menciptakan sejenis serangga yang dipanggil lebah yang merupakan salah satu tanda kebesaran peniptaan Allah s.w.t. Allah s.w.t. telah berfirman dalam kitab suciNya mengenai lebah pengeluar madu yang mempunyai berbagai-bagai manafaat dan penyembuh bagi keharmonian dan kebahagiaan hidup manusia di dunia yang sementara ini. Dan Tuhanmu mewahyukan kepada lebah: hendaklah kamu membuat sarangmu di gunung-ganang, di pokok-pokok kayu dan juga di babgunan-bangunan yang didirikan oleh manusia. Kemudian makanlah dari segala jenis bunga-bungaan dan buah-buahan (yang kamu sukai), serta turutlah jalan-jalan peraturan Tuhanmu yang diilhamkan dan dimudahkanNya kepadamu. Dengan itu, akan keluarlah minuman
(madu) yang berlainan warnanya dari dalam badannya yang mengandungi penawar bagi manusia daripada berbagai-bagai jenis penyakit. Sesungguhnya pada yang demikian itu, ada tanda (yang membuktikan kemurahan Allah) bagi orang-orang yang mahu berfikir. (al-Nahl: 68-69)

Di dalam satu riwayat hadis yang dinukilkan oleh Abu Sa’ed al-Khudri r.a., beliau telah berkata, “seorang lelaki telah datang menemui Rasulullah s.a.w. untuk mengadu tentang sakit perut.” Rasulullah s.a.w. telah bersabdakepada beliau, “Berilah dia minum madu.” Lelaki tadi pun memberikan madu untuk diminum oleh saudaranya itu. Kemudian beliau datang lagi untuk bertemu Rasulullah s.a.w. dan berkata, “Aku telah memberikannya minum madu, tetapi perutnya masih sakit.” Rasulullah s.a.w. telah bersabda kepada beliau, “Berikanlah ia minum madu.” Kemudian lelaki itu datang lagi dengan pengaduan bahawa penyakit perut saudaranya itu masih juga belum sembuh. Demikianlah yang dilakukannya sehingga tiga kali. Rasulullah s.a.w. masih menyuruhnya minum madu. Lelaki itu tetap datang juga dengan pengaduan yang serupa. Dengan yang demikian, Rasulullah s.a.w. telah bersabda, “Allah Maha Besar, perut saudaramu telah berdusta.” Riwayat Muslim.

Beberapa orang ulamak telah berkata lelaki itu mempunyai sisa-sisa makanan yang menyebabkan perutnya memulas sakit. Apabila diberikan madu kepadanya, oleh kerana sifat madu itu adalah panas maka ia menyebabkan perut perutnya sakit dan memulas-mulas. Kemudian diberi minum madu lagi, lalu menambah lagi rasa memulas di dalam perut lelaki tersebut. Oleh yang demikian, lelaki arab itu beranggapan bahawa madu itu memudaratkan perut saudaranya sedangkan madu itu memberi kesan baik kepada perut saudaranya itu. Setelah berulang kali diberi minum madu dan selepas setiap kali sakitnya memulas dan apabila segala sisa-sisa makanan yang memudaratkan badan tersebut dihancurkan dan dibuang memalui penyaluran najis, maka barulah pulih perut saudaranya itu dan kembali tenang keadaan dirinya dengan lenyapnya kesakitan dan kepedihan lantaran keberkatan petunjuk Rasulullah s.a.w. dari Tuhannya.

Daripada Aisyah r.a. katanya, “Madu adalah makanan kesukaan Rasulullah s.a.w.”

Ibn Abbas r.a. berkata, Rasulullah s.a.w. telah bersabda, “Penawar itu terdapat pada tiga perkara. Bekam, meminum madu dan membakar (mencos) diri dengan besi panas (dengan tujuan membunuh kuman) dan aku menegah umatku dari mulakukan pembakaran badan dengan besi panas.” Al-Bukhari.

Telah berkata jumhur ulamak bahawa madu dikeluarkan dari mulut lebah. Diriwayatkan dari Ali r.a. bahawa beliau berkata, “Kehinaan untuk dunia, semulia-mulia pakaian manusia di dalam kehidupan dunia adalah dari air liur sejenis serangga (kain sutera dari ulat sutera) dan semulia-mulia minuman adalah apa yang keluar dari mulut lebah (madu).”

Diriwayatkan oleh Ibnu Majah, al-Hakim daripada Ibnu Mas’ud r.a. sesungguhnya Nabi s.a.w. telah bersabda, “Madu adalah penyembuh bagi penyakit di dalam hati dan hendaklah kamu berubat dengan madu dan al-Quran.”

Diriwayatkan oleh Ibnu Majah daripada Abu Hurairah r.a. sabda Rasulullah s.a.w., “Barang siapa yang makan madu tiga hari dalam setiap bulan, tidak akan tertimpa keatasnya bala yang besar.”

Diriwayatkan daripada ‘Auf bin Malik r.a. bahawa sekiranya beliau sakit, beliau akan berkata bawakan air untukku kerana sesungguhnya Allah s.w.t. berfirman (maksudnya), “Kami menurunkan dari langit air yang berkat.” Kemudian beliau berkata, “Bawakan madu kepadaku (kemudian beliau membaca ayat 68-69 surah al-Nahl) dan bawakanlah kepadaku minyak (zaitun) lantaran ianya adalah dari pokok yang berkat.” Beliau mencampurkan ketiga-tiga jenis bahan itu dan beliau membaca ayat tadi.

Belajar daripada 'Lebah Madu' - Bukti tanda-tanda kebesaran Allah

Serangga berukuran 1-2 cm ini merupakan contoh haiwan yang banyak memberikan pengajaan kepada manusia.Ia memasukkan ke dalam tubuhnya sesuatu(kotoran) yang baik berupa madu.Haiwan ini seperti disebutkan dalam Al-Quran, memberikan manfaat yang besar.Lebah mengeluarkan madu bukan sahaja untuk diri mereka, melainkan untuk dimanfaatkan oleh manusia.Dengan kata lain, lebah juga mengabdikan diri melayan manusia.

Banyak sekali tanda-tanda kebesaran Allah yang dapat diperhatikan dalam kehidupan lebah.Penelitian yang dilakukan oleh para ilmuan telah membuktikan bahawa lebah selain menghasilkan produk-produk yang sangat bermanfaat, ternyata juga memiliki sifat-sifat mulia yang dapat dijadikan teladan oleh manusia.Sifat-sifat mulia yang ada pada lebah antara lain:

1.Cermat dan Teliti

Lebah menghasilkan sarangnya dengan cermat, efisien dan teliti.Ia membina sarang yang berbentuk segi enam (heksagon) dengan bahan baku propolis.Para ilmuan dan ahli matematik yang mengadakan penelitian tentang sarang yang berbentuk segi enam ini berhipotesis (mengandaikan) bahawa struktur segi enam adalah bentuk geometri yang paling sesuai untuk memanfaatkan setiap kawasan secara maksimum.Jika sel-sel sarang madu dihasilkan dengan bentuk yang lain, maka akan terdapat kawasan yang tidak terpakai sehingga hanya sedikit madu yang boleh disimpan dan sedikit lebah yang dapat merasakan manfaatnya.Menurut pakar matematik, bentuk heksagon menjadikan seluruh sarang lebah yang diperbuat daripada lilin rapuh tinggi dengan beban lebih kurang 20 kg madu.

2.Kerjasama Universal

Salah satu perkara yang membuatkan para ilmuan semakin takjub dengan hasil penelitiannya ialah, lebah mencontohkan persaudaraan dan kerjasama yang efektif ketika menghasilkan sarang yang dapat dihuni oleh sebanyak 80,000 ekor lebah.Sukar untuk dipercayai bahawa sarang madu lebah terdiri daripada 3 bahagian yang terpisah.Potongan-potongan sarang madu yang dihasilkan dimulai dari arah yang berbeza-beza, di atur begitu sempurna, sehingga meskipun terdapat ratusan sudut yang berbeza dalam strukturnya, sarang tetap nampak seperti satu sarang yang seragam.Untuk menghasilkannya, lebah harus terlebih dahulu menghitungkan jarak antara titik awal dan titik sambungan.Lebah membina sarangnya tanpa mengikut pelan.Sungguh satu tugasan yang hampir mustahil dilakukan oleh manusia.

3.Makanan yang baik

Lebah makan dari sesuatu yang baik iaitu 'nektar' dan serbuk sari bunga.Sehingga dari makanan ini dihasilkan sesuatu yang baik bahkan sangat bermanfaat iaitu 'Madu'.Secara klinikal juga telah dibuktikan bahawa sengatan lebah dapat mengubati pelbagai jenis penyakit, kerana cairan sengatan yang dihasilkan dikenali sebagai venom.Venom atau racun lebah dapat berfungsi mengubati 'prostatis kronis dan wasir'.Juga dapat 'merawat pesakit' yang menghidap penyakit kulit, usus, luka akibat terbakar dan sebagainya.

4.Bergerak Berdasarkan Petunjuk Allah

Lebah biasanya terbang dalam jarak yang jauh untuk mencari makanan.Mereka mengumpulkan serbuk sari bunga dan bahan pembuat madu dalam jarak 800 meter dari sarang.Seekor lebah telah menemukan bunga, kembali semula ke sarangnya untuk memberitahu lebah yang lain kedudukan bunga tersebut.Bagaimana lebah ini menunjukkan lokasi bunga tersebut kepada yang lain?.Menurut Prof. Mappatoba, lebah membeitahu lokasi bunga kepada rakan-rakannya dengan membuat gerakan tawaf.Lebah melakukan gerakan membentuk lingkaran di dalam sarang dengan membuat 'garisan azimuth' dari sinar matahari.Gerakan ini adalah ekspresi yang digunakan untuk memberitahu lebah lain tentang lokasi bunga.

Gerakan yang diulang-ulang, mengandungi semua informasi tentang sudut, jarak, arah dan sumber makanan lain.Apa yang kita lihat semua ini hanya sekelumit tanda-tanda kebesaran Allah Taala.Tetapi dari seekor haiwan yang bersais 1/3 anak jari manusia ini, telah memberi satu contoh dan iktibar bagi kita seorang insan dan manusia berakal, tetapi sering melawan Allah dalam melakukan perintah dan suruhannya.Bukalah mata hati.Tepuk dada, tanya iman.Wallahua'lam

Menyingkap Keajaiban Madu Lebah

Para pakar kesihatan dan perubatan merumuskan beberapa manfaat madu lebah, antaranya ialah:-

1.Mudah dicerna

Disebabkan molekul gula pada madu dapat berubah menjadi gula lain (fruktosa menjadi glukosa) madu mudah dicerna oleh perut.Madu dapat membantu pencernaan ginjal dan usus agar berfungsi dgn baik.

2.Rendah kalori

Jika dibandingkan dengan jumlah gula yang biasa kita ambil, kandungan kalori madu 40 peratus lebih rendah.Walaupun memberi energi yang besar, madu tidak menambahkan berat badan.

3.Berdifusi lebih cepat, melalui darah

Jika madu dicampurkan dengan air suam, madu dapat berdifusi dalam darah.Molekul gula yang terdapat dalam madu berfungsi untuk mencergaskan otak kerana otak merupakan pengguna gula terbesar.

4.Membantu pembentukan darah

Madu menyediakan banyak tenaga yang diperlukan oleh tubuh untuk pembentukan darah, atau lebih dikenali sebagai membantu membersihkan darah.Madu mempunyai pengaruh positif dalam mengatur dan membantu peredaran darah.Madu juga berfungsi sebagai pelindung terhadap masalah 'pembuluh kapiler' (darah) dan 'arerioskleorosis'.

5.Membunuh bakteria

Sifat madu yang membunuh bakteria disebut "efek inhibisi".Penyelidikan tentang madu menunjukkan bahawa sifat ini akan meningkat dua kali ganda jika dicampurkan dengan air.

6.Royal Jelly

Royal jelly adalah antara yang dikeluarkan lebah pekerja di dalam sarang.Bahan yang mengandungi pelbagai khasiat ini mengandungi gula, protein, lemak dan berbagai vitamin.

Royal jelly juga sesuai dimakan oleh mereka yang kekurangan zat makanan dalam tubuh.Jelaslah bahawa madu yang dikeluarkan jauh melebihi jumlah keperluan lebah, kerana ia dibuat untuk kepentingan manusia.Semua itu adalah kekuasaan dari Allah SWT yang menguasai dan mencipta alam semesta.

Firman Allah SWT di dalam Al-Quran"Buatlah sarang-sarang di bukit-bukit, di pohon-pohon kayu dan di tempat-tempat yang diperbuat oleh manusia," kemudian makanlah dari hari-hari(macam) buah-buahan dan tempuhlah jalan tuhanmu yang telah dipermudahkan (bagimu).

Dari perut lebah itu keluar minuman (madu) yang bermacam-macam warnanya, di dalamnya terdapat ubat yang dapat menyembuhkan bagi manusia.Sesungguhnya itu benar-benar terdapat tanda (kebesaran Allah) bagi orang-orang yang memikirkan," (Surah An-Nahl:ayat 68-69) .

Parents might consider giving their coughing child honey instead of medicine, according to a study released Monday.

Buckwheat honey — a dark variety sold in most grocery stores — relieved children's coughs and helped them sleep better than dextromethorphan, the drug in most over-the-counter cough suppressants, according to a report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Honey also beat out no treatment at all.

"(Honey) is a cheap and effective treatment," said Dr. Ian Paul, lead investigator for the study. "Consider using this as a treatment before going to the pharmacy to pick up an over-the-counter cough and cold medicine."

Honey has long been used by some parents as an alternative treatment for cough, although it should not be given to children under 1 year old.

The study comes at a time when parents are on the lookout for new ways to give sick children relief. A Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recommended last month that children under the age of 6 not be given over-the-counter cough and cold medicines.

For the study, 105 children ages 2-18 with upper respiratory tract infections that kept them awake at night were given either a dose of buckwheat honey, honey-flavored cough syrup or no treatment half an hour before bedtime.

One dose measured one-half teaspoon for children aged 2-5, one teaspoon for children aged 6-11 and two teaspoons for children aged 12-18.

A better night's sleep

Parents of the 35 children who received honey, given either on its own or with a non-caffeinated drink, reported they coughed less and slept better than those who gave their children nothing. The group that used honey also reported more favorable results than those who used cough syrup, but since the study group was small, those differences weren't statistically significant.

One local pediatrician said she wouldn't discourage parents from trying honey with their children, but more studies are needed to draw solid conclusions.

"In older children, if it makes them comfortable and it helps them sleep at night, then there may be a potential benefit," said Dr. Sara Rizvi, assistant professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine who also works at a primary care clinic at Texas Children's Hospital. "I would be reluctant to routinely recommend to all parents that they give honey, because in some rare cases children can have reactions to honey."

Paul, a pediatrician who practices at Penn State Children's Hospital and teaches at the university's College of Medicine, said he began the study because he was frustrated no treatment had been proven beneficial to relieve the common children's cough. Several years ago, he led another study that showed over-the-counter cough medicine was no more effective than placebos.

Honey not for infants

Honey is not only cheap and readily available, it's also generally safer than cough medicine, which can have side effects or be administered in the wrong dose.

Honey should not, however, be given to children under the age of 1 because it sometimes contains a bacteria that causes botulism, a rare paralytic illness that can result in death. Unlike older children, infants can't fight the bacteria.

Paul's group tested buckwheat honey instead of the lighter, more popular varieties because it's known to have more antioxidant and antimicrobial effects, which have been shown in other studies to help wounds heal. Honey may suppress cough because its sweetness causes salivation that coats the throat, authors of the study suggested.

"It's kind of amazing that something so simple could be an answer," Paul said.
The study was paid for by the National Honey Board, an industry-funded agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Under the provisions of the grant, the group was not involved in the study or the published results, Paul said.

Scientists who assembled during the World Apiculture Conference held from 20-26 September 1993 in China confirmed that honey is a 'healing for men'. During the conference, treatments with honey derivatives were discussed. American scientists in particular said that honey, royal jelly, pollen and propolis (bee resin) cure many diseases. A Romanian physician stated that he tried honey on cataract patients, and 2002 out of his 2094 patients completely recovered. Polish doctors also informed the conference that bee resin helps to cure many diseases such as haemorrhoids, skin problems, gynecological diseases and many other disorders.

1. Easily digested: Sugar molecules in honey can convert into other sugars (eg. fructose to glucose), the most sensitive stomachs, despite its high acid content, easily digest honey, It helps the kidneys and intestines to function better.

2. Low calorie level: When it is compared with the same amount of sugar, honey carries 40% less calories to the body. Although it gives great energy to the body, it does not add weight.

3. Rapidly diffuses through the blood: When accompanied by mild water, honey diffuses into the bloodstream in 7 minutes. It frees sugar molecules making the brain function better since the brain is the largest consumer of sugar.

4. Supports blood formation: Honey provides an important part of the energy needed by the body for blood formation. In addition, it helps in cleansing the blood, and functions as a protection against capillary problems and arteriosclerosis.

5. Does not accommodate bacteria: Experiments conducted on honey show that its bactericide properties increase twofold when diluted in water. It is very interesting to note that newly born bees in the colony are nourished with diluted honey by the bees responsible for their supervision.

It is obvious that honey, which is produced in much higher amounts than the requirements of the bees, is made for the benefit of mankind. It is also obvious that bees cannot perform such an unbelievable task 'on their own.’

Types of Honey

There are two major types of honey: a) Flowers' honey: which is dependent on flower nectar sucked by bees , and this is divided into two main categories: 1- Mono-flower honey: produced the nectar of one type of flowers 2- Multi-flower honey: produced from the nectar of more than one type of flowers. b) Stone honey: This honey is produced by undomesticated bees that live among stones. It has a great taste and a pleasant smell. Some people believe that light-colored honey is the best whereas many others believe that the dark-colored honey is of better quality because it contains more mineral salts like iron, magnesium and copper. As in regard to its odor, some types of honey bear good smell while other types, which are extracted from certain trees, have unpleasant odor.

Component elements of Honey

Honey is composed of sugar, water, vitamins, mineral salts along with some proteins, enzymes, yeasts and other substances- 18% water, 40% fructose, 34% glucose, 4% sucrose and maltose and many other types of sugar. The history of honey goes back to the 10th century B.C. Then, Yemen was known as the nation of perfume and honey and honey trade was ranked 4th in importance to the country's economy.

Al-Elb "Al-Sededi" honey is the best quality honey because of its preferable qualities to consumers. Honey merchants said the price of honey next season will double because of the floods. Yemeni honey, famed for its regenerative and healing properties, is under threat after floods destroyed thousands of beehives in the southeast, threatening the production of what is commonly known as "natural Viagra."

Deadly floods last month that killed dozens and forced thousands to flee hit the honey-producing provinces of Hadhramut the hardest and decimated beekeepers as thousands of hives were washed away.

Yemeni honey is known for its healing properties, cosmetic benefits and contains natural stimulants that has given it the nickname “natural Viagra.”

Beekeeper Ahmed Hadi, who owned 800 beehives, was looking forward to the profits the honey season usually brings but instead was taken by surprise when torrential rainfall drowned his farm and killed his son and a worker.

"I asked for compensation, but they told us that the priority is only for the natives of Hadhramaut," Hadi told AlArabiya.net.

More than 37,000 beehives in the area were destroyed by the floods, according to police reports submitted by Wadi Doan residents. Many beekeepers were killed and many others are still missing.

Honey merchants said that the floods will double the prices of honey next season. The price of one kilogram of Hadhramaut honey reached 10,000 riyals ($50).

Prices vary according to type of honey. Al-Sedr honey, usually produced in November, is the most expensive and is primarily exported.

About 17 percent of the honey produced by Yemen’s more than one million beehives is exported, generating $9 million per year, according to statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture.

Hadhramaut honey business alone is worth 2.25 billion riyals ($11.3 million) and constitutes 26 percent of total honey production of Yemen.

In a 2006 article Yemeni honey research Abdullah Yareem noted that laboratory studies found that Yemeni honey in particular was effective in treating topical wounds by speeding the creation of new skin cells and the absorption of oxygen.

Humble Honey Kills Bacteria

(WebMD) If you start poking around into the history of honey, you'll find the stuff is revered in many early cultures.

Honey is mentioned in the Bible, it was used to preserve corpses by the ancient Egyptians, was considered sacred during the time of Buddha, and the prophet Muhammad PBUH espoused its potential healing properties.

But it's only been in recent times that science has been able to prove and explain the benefits that honey holds.

Now a new study from researchers at the University of Ottawa shows honey to be effective in killing bacteria that cause chronic sinusitis.

Honey Kills Bacteria
Chronic sinusitis affects millions of people every year.

In chronic sinusitis, the mucous membranes in the sinus cavities become inflamed, causing headaches, stuffy nose, and difficulty breathing.

Though it can be caused by allergies, chronic sinusitis can also be caused by bacteria that colonize in the nose and sinuses. That's where honey may help.

Researchers, led by Tala Alandejani, MD, at the University of Ottawa, tested two honeys, manuka and sidr.

Manuka honey comes from the manuka bush, also known as the tea tree bush, in New Zealand. Sidr honey comes from the sidr tree in Yemen, an ancient and sacred tree mentioned in spiritual texts. It's one of the world's most expensive honeys.

Researchers singled out three particularly nasty bacteria: two strains of staph bacteria, MSSA (methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus) and MRSA(methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), and one called Pseudomonas aeriginosa(PA).

The two types of honey were effective in killing the bacteria. Even bacteria growing in a biofilm, a thin, slimy layer formed by bacteria that affords resistance to antibiotics, were susceptible to honey.

The researchers also found that the two types of honey worked significantly better than an antibiotic against MSSA and MRSA, according to past research.

Here's the breakdown of results:
Sidr honey was 63% effective in killing MSSA.
Sidr honey was 73% effective in killing MRSA.
Sidr honey was 91% effective in killing PA.
Manuka honey was 82% effective in killing MSSA.
Manuka honey was 63% effective in killing MRSA.
Manuka honey was 91% effective in killing PA.

Scientists hope the results can help lead to a new treatment for people with chronic sinusitis. One note of caution: Infants one year or younger should never be given honey because it could become toxic in their underformed intestinal tract, causing illness or even death.

There is a reason bees protect it and bears love it, honey is not only delicious but used for healing. A spoonful of honey will coat your throat and soothe the sore during the cold season and added to tea it is used as a sweet yet healthy way to put you at ease. Honey has been used as a staple in diets as far back as biblical times and it was known to be used as currency during the Roman Empire. A new study suggests honey may be good for those suffering from sinusitis—an inflammation of the sinuses that could be a result of bacterial, fungal, allergy or viral infections—also known as rhinosinusitis including an inflammation of the nose.

The findings from this new study were to be presented this week at the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation’s annual meeting. Canada’s University of Ottawa conducted the study and it’s co-author Dr. Joseph G. Marsan wasn’t surprised at the natural bacteria fighters in honey that they found, “Honey has been used in traditional medicine as a natural anti-microbial dressing for infected wounds for hundreds of years.”
The researchers investigated the activity of honey on bacteria-laden communities called “biofilms,” responsible for a lot of chronic infections, including sinusitis. Biofilms are known to reject the prescription antibiotics and over the counter remedies most used by patients with sinus symptoms. Dr. Marsan explains that popular antibiotics are blocked by bacteria clumped together in biofilms even though the reason is unknown, “Certain bacteria…have found a method of shielding themselves from the activity of anti-microbials by living in substances called biofilms, which cannot be penetrated...”.

Marsan and his team found that only certain honeys contain the bacteria-killers needed to successfully manage the inflammatory aspects of these chronic infections, "Our study has shown that certain honeys, namely the Manuka honey from New Zealand and the Sidr honey from Yemen, have a powerful killing action on these bacterial biofilms that is far superior to the most powerful anti-microbials used in medicine today”. Although they were able to isolate the different types of honey that provided anti-bacterial effects, the researchers still have to bring these superhero honey formulas out of the Petri dish and into clinical trials using lab animals and later on actual patients.

A chronic sinus infection lasts at least a few months, with over 31 million people in the United States alone undergoing nonstop courses of treatment from pills to antibiotics to nasal sprays, and even a process called irrigation in which a mixture of salt water is poured up the nose into the sinuses in order to provide at least some relief. While dealing with cold symptoms nonstop and none of those options working long term, surgery is sometimes the course of action to alleviate the pain. With this new evidence of honey helping where all the others fail to kill the bacteria, scientists say their methods of treating patients won’t be very different from their usual ways.

An ear, nose and throat resident at the University of Ottawa, Dr. Talal Alandejani says when honey is approved for antibacterial use for sinus sufferers, they will try the familiar idea of irrigation but substitute the salt water mixture, "we'll use an irrigation needle. This is not new….Probably in the non-medical world it sounds weird, but we've been irrigating with antibiotics already, so it's the same equipment . . . we’re just going to use honey in it."

While we await approval for animal testing and further approval for the wide use on humans as an alternative to drugs and surgery, the researchers don’t know yet what exactly in the honey is causing the desired effect, but no one is complaining. The upside is that I haven’t seen any bears with post-nasal drip lately and that makes honey a little sweeter.

CANADA: Canadian doctors have confirmed that manuka honey can be better than antibiotics when it comes to killing bacteria that cause sinus infections.

Researchers tested the effectiveness of three types of honey -.- manuka honey from New Zealand, sidr honey from Yemen, and Canada's clover and buckwheat honey - with the superbug Staphylococcus aureus, which is highly resistant to antibiotics.

Both New Zealand’s manuka honey and Yemen’s sidr honey effectively killed bacteria, but the clover and buckwheat honey had no effect at all.

Scientists are yet to discover exactly what component of honey kills bacteria.

The news follows a recent study in Ireland which confirmed the effectiveness of honey dressings for wounds.
The clinical trial found that Comvita’s Medihone dressings made with Manuka honey significantly improves the healing rates of stalled venous leg ulcers.

Eva Crane (1983) evidences this with a depiction a line drawing of a Mesolithic rock painting showing two honey-hunters collecting honey and honeycomb from a wild nest. The two women are naked and employ a long wobbly ladder which appears to be made out of a kind of grass in order to reach the wild nest. Both women carry baskets or bags. This rock painting is on a wall in a cave in Valencia, Spain.

Islamic Medicine

The Qur'an mentions the benefits of honey.[40]"And thy Lord taught the bee to build its cells in hills, on trees and in (men's) habitations…there issues from within their bodies a drink of varying colours, wherein is healing for mankind. Verily in this is a Sign for those who give thought".[41]

There is an entire Surah in the Qur'an called al-Nahl (the Bees).

According to hadith, Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) strongly recommended honey for healing purposes.[42]

Biblical Period

The Old Testament contains many references to honey. The book of Exodus famously describes the Promised Land as a "land flowing with milk and honey" (33:3). However, the claim has been advanced that the original Hebrew (devash) actually refers to the sweet syrup produced from the juice of the date.[36] In The Book of Judges, Samson found a swarm of bees and honey in the carcass of a lion (14:8). In Matthew 3:4, John the Baptist is said to have lived for a long period of time in the wilderness on a diet consisting of locusts and wild honey. The word "honey" appears 56 times in the King James Version of the Bible.[citation needed]
In Jewish tradition, honey is a symbol for the new year—Rosh Hashana. At the traditional meal for that holiday, apple slices are dipped in honey and eaten to bring a sweet new year. Some Rosh Hashana greetings show honey and an apple, symbolizing the feast. In some congregations, small straws of honey are given out to usher in the new year.

Buddhism

Honey plays an important role in the festival of Madhu Purnima, celebrated by Buddhists in India and Bangladesh. The day commemorates Buddha's making peace among his disciples by retreating into the wilderness. The story goes that while he was there, a monkey brought him honey to eat. On Madhu Purnima, Buddhists remember this act by giving honey to monks. The monkey's gift is frequently depicted in Buddhist art.

Mediterranean region

In the Roman Empire, honey was possibly used instead of gold to pay taxes. Pliny the Elder devotes considerable space in his book Naturalis Historia to the bee and honey, and its many uses.

In some parts of Greece, it was formerly the custom for a bride to dip her fingers in honey and make the sign of the cross before entering her new home. This was meant to ensure sweetness in her married life, especially in her relationship with her mother-in-law.[citation needed]

The honey bee exhibits a combination of individual traits and social co-operation which is unparalleled in the animal kingdom. A glimpse into the nest makes it apparent why honey bees have fascinated us from the earliest days of scientific observations. The infrastructure of the nest, the perfectly uniform and functional comb, is composed of beeswax and is constructed into a repeating series of almost perfect hexagonal cells.

At the individual level, honey bees have not one but three types of colony members: queens, drones and workers, each with their own specialisations and place in honey bee society. The queen reigns over the nest, surrounded by attendants and fed the rich food she requires to perform her few but crucial tasks in the colony. The queen produces powerful pheromones, chemical signals to recipient workers which control many of their behaviours and provide part of the 'social glue' which holds honey bee life together. A highly organised social structure exists within the colony and elaborate 'dances' are used to communicate the location of food sources.

The products of the hive are important to the modern agricultural system. Not only do honey bees provide us with honey, wax, propolis, royal jelly and pollen but they also pollinate a good portion of our crops, including such diverse agricultural plants as fruit trees, oilseeds, small berries and forage crops.

Honey is a remarkable viscous liquid, prepared by the bees from the nectars of various plants. It has occupied a prominent place in traditional medicines throughout world history. The ancient Egyptians, Assyrians, Chinese, Greeks and Romans employed honey for wounds and diseases of the gut. When the Children of Israel were in Egypt or journeying through the desert, their promised goal was a 'land flowing with milk and honey'.

Both the holy Qur'an and Hadith refer to honey as a healer of disease.

In addition, the Prophet (PBUH) said:
'Honey is a remedy for every illness and the Qur'an is a remedy for all illness of the mind, therefore I recommend to you both remedies, the Qur'an and honey.'(Bukhari)

The reader may be surprised to learn that the above quotation from the Qur'an is mentioned in a well known encyclopedia on honey (reference 3).

In recent years, scientific support is beginning to emerge confirming the beneficial effects of honey on certain medical and surgical conditions. These effects may be summarised as follows:

Antibacterial and antifungal properties

These properties of honey are well established. Undiluted honey inhibits the growth of bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, certain gut pathogens and fungi such as Candida albicans. At a concentration of 30-50%, honey has been shown to be superior to certain conventional antibiotics in treating urinary tract infections. The exact mechanism of the anti-microbial effect of honey remains obscure. Low pH, osmotic disruption of pathogens and thepresence of bactericidal substances, collectively called inhibine may all play a part.

Anti-diarrhoeal properties

At a concentration of 40%, honey has a bactericidal effect on various gut bacteria known to cause diarrhoea and dysentery such as Salmonella, Shigella, enteropathogenic E. coli and Vibrio cholera. In one study, honey given with oral rehydration fluid was shown to reduce the duration of bacterial diarrhoea in infants and children.

Wound-healing and anti-inflammatory properties

Honey is of value in treating burns, infected surgical wounds and decubitus ulcers. Honey is very viscous, enabling it to absorb water from surrounding inflamed tissue. For example, a study in West Africa showed that skin grafting, surgical debridement and even amputation were avoided when local application of honey to wound promoted healing, whereas conventional treatment failed.

In another study, wound healing was accelerated by application of honey in women who had undergone radical vulvectomy for vulval cancer. Also, it has been suggested that honey may be useful in the treatment of chronic, foul smelling ulcers seen in leprosy.

Anti-tussive and expectorant properties

These anti-cough properties of honey are related to its capacity to dilute bronchial secretions and improve the function of the bronchial epithelium.

Nutritional properties

Uncontaminated honey is a healthy, easily digestible, natural and energy rich food. It contains carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, enzymes and vitamins. One tablespoon of honey provides 60 calories and contains 11g of carbohydrates, 1mg of calcium, 0.2mg of iron, 0.lmg of vitamin B and 1mg of vitamin C.

Honey is widely available in most communities but its medical potential remains grossly underutilised. Its mode of action remains incompletely understood and the healing properties of honey in other clinical and laboratory situations requires further evaluation. The miraculous beneficial properties of honey, so beautifully ex-pressed in the holy Qur'an and Sunnah 14 centuries ago expose the reluctance of modern science to accept and exploit this 'traditional remedy'.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 1, 2008) — Honey is very effective in killing bacteria in all its forms, especially the drug-resistant biofilms that make treating chronic rhinosinusitis difficult, according to research presented during the 2008 American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNSF) Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO, in Chicago, IL.*

The study, authored by Canadian researchers at the University of Ottawa, found that in eleven isolates of three separate biofilms (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and methicicillin-resistant and -suseptible Staphylococcus aureus), honey was significantly more effective in killing both planktonic and biofilm-grown forms of the bacteria, compared with the rate of bactericide by antibiotics commonly used against the bacteria.

Given the historical uses of honey in some cultures as a homeopathic treatment for bad wound infections, the authors conclude that their findings may hold important clinical implications in the treatment of refractory chronic rhinosinusitis, with topical treatment a possibility.

Chronic rhinosinusitis affects approximately 31 million people each year in the United States alone, costing over $4 billion in direct health expenditures and lost workplace productivity. It is among the three most common chronic diseases in all of North America.

PNS disaran Hentikan biaya francais

KUALA LUMPUR 8 Sept. 2009 - Perbadanan Nasional Bhd. (PNS) diminta memberhentikan pembiayaan bagi beberapa sistem francais di bawah kelolaannya kerana didapati tidak mendatangkan keuntungan langsung kepada francaisi.

Ia berikutan terdapatnya keadaan seolah-olah francaisor menjadikan francaisi umpan untuk mendapatkan dana kerajaan dengan mudah.

Kebimbangan itu disuarakan oleh lebih 30 usahawan yang kini bimbang kemungkinan diistiharkan muflis berikutan kegagalan mereka meneruskan perniagaan yang disertai.

Bekas francaisi Marrybrown, Jukebox, Watershop, VV Shop, Camps Apparel, Sinma dan Kwikstop berharap pendedahan yang dibuat akan membuka mata pihak berkaitan untuk mencari jalan penyelesaian.

Setiap usahawan kini menanggung hutang sekitar RM100,000 hingga RM450,000 setelah didakwa terdapat penindasan dan ketidakadilan yang dilakukan oleh syarikat induk atau francaisor itu.

"Sepatutnya, di dalam perniagaan francais mestilah wujud keadaan menang-menang tetapi dalam keadaan ini keuntungan lebih memihak kepada francaisor," dakwa bekas francaisi Jukebox, Hapsah Jaafar kepada wartawan hari ini.

Katanya, para francaisi kerap menghadapi kerugian yang tidak munasabah dan kurang jelas seolah-olah "dicipta" oleh francaisor.

"Antaranya, francaisi akan berhutang belian stok kerana ia tidak dibenarkan memilih dan mengawal stok sendiri. Sebaliknya ia dikawal dan ditentukan oleh francaisor.

"Had belian stok yang tidak dikawal dan dipantau serta penghantaran stok hampir setiap hari telah menyebabkan belian melebihi jualan. Akhirnya francaisi berhutang dengan francaisor."

Beliau amat berharap PNS tidak lagi meneruskan sistem francais yang membabitkan syarikat-syarikat induk tersebut supaya lebih ramai lagi bakal francaisi akan terselamat.

Hapsah yang terpaksa menutup perniagaan selepas setahun beroperasi berkata, bagi sistem francais Jukebox, katanya, PNS membiayai 11 peserta di mana kini lapan telah menutup perniagaan.

"Tiga lagi rakan kami sedang "nyawa-nyawa ikan" dan akan berakhir dengan nasib yang sama." Francaisor bagi Jukebox adalah Harian Shoes Sdn. Bhd., yang menjual kasut lelaki, wanita dan kanak-kanak serta aksesori.

Peserta PNS pula rata-rata merupakan bekas siswa dan siswazah.

"Bayangkan pada usia yang muda, kami kini telah dibebankan dengan hutang yang tidak sepatutnya," kata bekas francaisi Marrybrown Restaurant, Md Hizal Mustafa.

Katanya, kini terdapat lapan buah outlet Marrybrown yang terpaksa ditutup walau pun kurang dua tahun beroperasi berikutan menghadapi masalah yang hampir serupa dengan francaisornya.

"Jika kami dikatakan tidak mampu untuk menjalankan perniagaan, bagaimana PNS boleh yakin kepada kami dan meluluskan pinjaman kami." "Malah sebahagian daripada kami menggunakan wang poket sendiri bagi memulakan perniagaan sebelum pinjaman PNS diperolehi," katanya.

"Bayangkan berapa banyak wang pelaburan kerajaan untuk PNS terbuang tanpa hasil. Jika francais berjaya dan kami mampu membayar balik pinjaman, bukankan ia menguntungkan semua pihak."

Md Hizal berkata, terdapat juga francaisi bukan di bawah kelolaan PNS menghadapi masalah yang sama.

Sementara itu, Persatuan Pengguna Islam Malaysia (PPIM) yang menganjurkan sidang akhbar pada hari ini berharap pihak kementerian yang berkaitan dapat menyelesaikan kemelut francais dan francaisor ini.

"Pihak pembiaya umpamanya perlu melihat semula sistem francais secara keseluruhannya. Mereka perlu sekurang-kurangnya gariskan tahap kejayaan francaisi itu, adakah ia berjaya setakat pinjaman berjaya diperolehi atau bagaimana?," kata Setiausaha Kerja PPIM, Datuk Nadzim Johan.

PNS sebelum ini katanya, telah memberi pemahaman kepada peserta bahawa mereka akan mendapat bimbingan dan bantuan daripada PNS serta syarikat induk yang dipilih."

Namun dengan situasi buntu ketika ini melihatkan pihak terbabit termasuk kementerian berkaitan, dan PFM seperti melepaskan tangan, katanya.

Bekas usahawan yang terlibat telah mengajukan permasalahan mereka kepada PNS, PFM malah kementerian terbabit, tetapi tiada sebarang tindakan di ambil.

"Mungkin akta francais perlu diubah," kata Nadzim. - Bernama

MADU LEBAH MENURUT AL-QURAN & HADIS

Selaras dengan perkembangan dunia yang semakin canggih, dunia perubatan juga semakin maju berbanding dengan cara perubatan dahulu. Oleh itu rawatan-rawatan tertumpu kepada cara moden di hospital-hospital yang cukup dengan segala kemudahan dan kepakaran. Namun begitu berubat mengikut saranan al-Qur'an dan hadis masih tetap mengambil tempat di dalam kehidupan masyarakat Islam.

Menurut Nabi Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wasallam setiap penyakit itu pasti ada ubatnya. Sabda Baginda :

Maksudnya : "Berubatlah, maka sesungguhnya Allah tidak meletakkan penyakit kecuali Allah menyediakan baginya ubat, kecuali satu penyakit, iaitu tua" ( Hadis riwayat Abu Daud)

Beberapa kajian telah diusahakan yang tertumpu kepada bahan-bahan semulajadi daripada tumbuh-tumbuhan dan buah-buahan. Begitu juga dengan madu lebah kerana dalam al-Quran sendiri telah menggariskan pelbagai pengajaran dan maklumat penjagaan diri daripada pelbagai penyakit, maupun kesihatan jasad atau rohani agar kita dapat mengerjakan segala perintah Allah dengan teratur.

Firman Allah dalam surah an-Nahl:

(Surah An-NAhl: 69). Tafsirnya: "Kemudian makanlah daripada setiap macam buah-buahan dan tempuhlah jalan Tuhanmu yang telah dimudahkan. Daripada perut lebah itu keluar minuman madu yang bermacam-macam warnanya, di dalamnya terdapat ubat menyembuhkan bagi manusia. Sesungguhnya pada yang demikian itu benar-benar terdapat tanda kebesaran Tuhan bagi orang yang memikirkan.

" Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wasallam juga ada berpesan agar seseorang itu berubat dengan madu dan al-Qur'an, Baginda bersabda:

Maksudnya: "Ambillah / pergunakanlah olehmu sekalian akan dua ubat penyembuh iaitu madu dan al-Qur'an." (Hadis riwayat Ibnu Majah)

Daripada hadis tersebut ternyata madu mempunyai keistimewaan yang tersendiri dengan nilai-nilai utama dalam ilmu kesihatan, yang mempunyai zat-zat besi dan vitamin yang kuat. Di samping itu madu juga dianggap penting kerana memenuhi keperluan tubuh dan cepat memberi tenaga.

Mereka yang mengetahui akan khasiat madu akan menggunakannya secara rutin, hal ini bukan hanya teori tetapi telah dibuktikan daripada beberapa kajian yang telah dilakukan di mana jika ianya diamalkan setiap hari akan mencegah daripada pelbagai penyakit dan memberi tenaga yang cukup.

Di samping itu madu juga seringkali digunakan untuk sampingan sarapan pagi agar tenaga segera siap digunakan dalam menjalankan kerja harian. Madu juga memiliki aroma enak yang meningkatkan selera, sepertimana Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wasallam juga mengamalkannya. Diperkuatkan dengan hadis baginda yang berbunyi:

Maksudnya: "Dari Abu Hurairah, dia berkata: Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wasallam bersabda: "Barangsiapa yang menjilat madu sebanyak tiga kali pagi pada setiap bulan, maka dia tidak akan terkena cubaan yang besar."

Di samping itu dengan memakan madu juga boleh menyembuhkan batuk-batuk yang menganggu dan boleh mencegah daripada kekejangan pada otot tubuh khususnya pada bahagian kaki. Dalam perubatan tradisional, madu telah dimanfaatkan untuk menahan luka-luka terbakar pada kulit. Jika diusapkan madu akan dapat mengurangi rasa sakit yang menyengat dan mencegah pembentukan lepuh (melecur) dan cepat sekali menyembuhkan kawasan yang terbakar. Di samping itu banyak lagi penyakit yang boleh sembuh misalnya hidung tersumbat, anak yang kencing malam dan sesuai untuk kanak-kanak damit yang baru lahir.

Dalam al-Qur'an, hadis-hadis yang disebutkan dan amalan perubatan tradisional, madu mempunyai keistimewaannya yang tersendiri. Adalah menjadi suatu amalan yang baik menjadikan madu sebagai ubat dan penjagaan kesihatan.

MADU LEBAH MENURUT KAJIAN SAINTIFIK

Menurut Dr. Susan Percival dari Jabatan Nutrisi Manusia dan Sains Makanan, Universiti Florida, Amerika Syarikat, MADU LEBAH mengandungi pelbagai kandungan mineral dan vitamin seperti B6, Thiamin, Miacin, ribotlorina dan asid pontohenic.

Madu juga mengandungi zat-zat seperti kalsium, zat besi, kuprum, magnesium, phosporus, potassium, sodium dan zink. MADU LEBAH juga berperanan sebagai antioksida dalam badan manusia yang mampu menghapuskan bahan-bahan radikal yang menjadi penyebab utama kepada penyakit-penyakit kronik. Kajian terkini membuktikan kandungan MADU LEBAH yang terdiri dari bahan semulajadi pelbagai gula seperti glukos dan fruktos. Ini meningkatkan stamina para atlit, menurut Dr. Susan lagi.

Dalam satu kajian lain, pakar mikrobiologi Amerika, Richard F. Stier mendapati komposisi unik kandungan MADU LEBAH juga boleh menjadi agen anti-mikrobial, untuk merawat kulit yang cedera akibat kebakaran atau luka. Ia juga mampu mengelakkan jangkitan berpunca dari bakteria.

Menurut Dr. Paul Gold, seorang Profesor Psikologi dari University of Virginia, "manusia dapat mengingati sesuatu perkara dengan lebih baik selepas mereka mengambil glukos, sejenis gula yang terdapat dalam MADU LEBAH". The religion of Islam has given special interest in honey and its advantages for curing many kinds of diseases. Prophet Mohammed said: "Seek cure from honey and Qur'an". So, honey was made next to the Qur'an in curing diseases.

There is even one Chapter in the Qur'an named "Al-Nahl" meaning bees. Moreover, in another Hadith, Prophet Mohammed said: "He who has a spoonful of (honey) in the morning, three times a month, shall catch have no serious disease".
Eating honey three times a month could safeguard you against so many diseases and strengthen your immunity system. It is said that the Pophet was used to have honey diluted with water the first thing in the morning.

Types of Honey There are two major types of honey:
a) Flowers' honey: Which is dependent on flower nectar sucked by bees , and this is divided into two main categories:
1- Mono-flower honey: produced the nectar of one type of flowers
2- Multi-flower honey: produced from the nectar of more than one type of flowers.

b) Stone honey: This honey is produced by undomesticated bees that live among stones. It has a great taste and a Pleasant smell. Some people believe that light-colored honey is the best whereas many others believe that the dark-colored honey is of better quality because it contains more mineral salts like iron, magnesium and copper. As in regard to its odor, some types of honey bear good smell while other types, which are extracted from certain trees, have unpleasant odor.

Component elements of Honey Honey is:-
Composed of sugar, water, vitamins, mineral salts along with some proteins, enzymes, yeasts and other substances- 18% water, 40% fructose, 34% glucose, 4% sucrose and maltose and many other types of sugar.

Sugar is thus the main ingredient of honey, constituting about 75% to 80% of it. Therefore honey tastes sweeter than sugar and nevertheless it is good for treating diabetes and good for liver. In addition, honey is used to cure peptic and intestines ulcer, digestion problems, eyes diseases, sinusitis, flu and the inflammation of the urinary canal.

Yemen possesses many of the best kinds of honey. The most famous ones are:
Al-Dawa'ani that is found in Dawa'an, Hadramout,
Al-Jardani in Shabwa,
Al-Jawahi in Awash,
Dhamar and there are also some good kinds of honey found in Al-Kibbayta, Al-Dimna, and Maweyah in Taiz.

"Al-Dawa'ani" or "Sidr" is the most expensive kind of honey in Yemen and the best in quality. Honey has become one of the most precious gifts that are presented to Sheiks, ministers or well known social personalities. Therefore, many people prefer buying Yemeni honey to low-quality foreign honey which is usually mixed with water.

The Yemen Times has interviewed Mr. Abdullah Hassan Ahmed Al-Shara'abi, Technical Manager of the Apiculture Development Project, who has told us about the types of Yemeni honey, their properties, where are they found and which are the best one's: "Apiculture is one of the very ancient jobs in the history of Yemen. The history of honey goes back to the 10th century B.C. Then, Yemen was known as the nation of perfume and honey and honey trade was ranked 4th in importance to the country's economy.

Al-Elb "Al-Sededi" honey is the best quality honey, because of its preferable qualities to consumers. Therefore, apiarists compete to satisfy consumers inside and outside the country by producing better quality honey. As for the different kinds of Yemeni honey, our country has many different kinds that vary as the available farms in each district vary.
Some of the finest kinds of honey is

Al-Elb "Al-Sededi" - Ziziphus spina chisti),
Al- Silm (A cacia ehrenbergiana),
Al-Asak (A cacia asak),
Al-Sal (Eiaphorbia),
Al-Dobbah (A cacia menthfera),

For example, Al-Elb honey has a golden coloured, with an aroma and flavour like that of the Elb flower and a thickness property unique to this kind of honey. Each kind of honey has its different season.

Al-Silm in - (January and February),
Al-Dobbah - (January and February),
Al-Asak - (May and July),

Sidr Honey of Yemen - The Highly Esteemed Sidr Honey

To appreciate this highly revered honey, one has to understand the story behind its tree.

The Sidr tree, (also known as Lote tree, Christ's Thorn, Jujube or Nabkh tree. Botanical name: Ziziphus spina-christi) is an ancient tree. The Jujube fruit was the first thing Prophet Adam (pbuh) ate when he was made to descend to earth. The tree was used during the time of King Suleiman (pbuh) and the Pharaohs to build palaces and temples.

This highly resilient tree is also sacred as it is mentioned four times in the Qur'an. In Sura Saba, it is mentioned as an earth tree while in other Suras, it is mentioned as a paradise tree (Sidrat al-Muntaha). Allah has mentioned this tree to emphasize its beauty, strength and grandeur (Saba 15,16; Waqia 27-33; Najm 7-18).

It is a sturdy and deep-rooted tree which has withstood the devastating floods of Eram at Ma'arib with two other trees: the Tamarisk and the Mustard Tree. (Saba 15,16).

All of its parts have medicinal values. Its leaves are used as a herbal shampoo, to treat dandruff, head lice, swollen eyes, abscesses, furuncles and counter obesity. Mixed with warm water the leaves are used to clean the body since they are a disinfectant and the oil from the resin is deodorant. Its wood ash is used for the treatment of snakebites. Its fruits are found to have a very high energy value. Its seeds are rich in protein; its leaves rich in calcium, iron and magnesium. The root, stem bark are also used in various medicinal preparations. Other known medicinal uses include as a stomachic, an appetizer, an astringent and also as a cough medicine.

Not many are aware that different honeys differ. They differ in their composition, they differ in their nutritional values and they differ in their therapeutic properties.

Research done on different honeys confirmed that floral source, climate when the honey is being harvested and soil composition are all key factors in determining not only its flavor, colour or aroma but also its quality and effectiveness for medicinal or health-promoting purposes.

Another important factor affecting a honey's curative qualities is purity. Only crude, unprocessed honey has shown to be effective.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Yemeni's Sidr honey is a hundred times more expensive than the other kinds of honey on the global market because of differences in their medicinal and nutritive benefits.

Some of the extraordinary qualities of the Sidr Honey

HIGHLY POTENT - Yemeni's beekeepers who are strict in ensuring the honeys purity and potency will allow their bees to die rather than feed the bees with sugary syrup. Typically, bees of a certain hive make 37,000 trips just to make half a kilo of honey but bees fed solely on the nectar of the Sidr flower die after making about 3 trips! The weaker bees cannot withstand the potency of the nectar of this remarkable tree.

ORGANIC - the Sidr trees are grown wild and uncultivated in the desert areas of Yemen.

RAW & PURE - in Yemen, the method of beekeeping has always been a traditional one. No chemicals or drugs allowed (in modern agriculture, chemicals and antibiotics are widely used to control mites and other bee diseases in the hives). No machinery used. All are done using their hands, a little smoke (from dried camel skins) and knives. The honey is then poured, unheated and raw, into containers, thus preserving its vital live enzymatic constituents.

NATURAL APHRODISIAC - mixed with carrot seeds, it becomes an aphrodisiac. A blend of the honey with certain combination of nuts, ginseng and herbs are claimed to be better than Viagra, with no side effects.

MEDICINAL - every drop of honey holds the spark of life. Our forefathers had understood honey's remarkable healing gift and had used it successfully in curing most diseases. Sidr honey has been reported to be good for liver problems, stomach ulcers, respiratory infections, diseases resulting from malnutrition, digestive problems, constipation, eye diseases, infected wounds and burns, surgical wounds (incl. caesarian), promote speedy recovery after childbirth, facilitates menstruation, (with various plants) it can be used against epilepsy, strengthened the immune systems, to promote general health and vitality.

ANTIOXIDANT - Some honeys are found to have as much as 75-150 mg ascorbic acid per 100g while others, less than 5mg per 100mg. Antioxidants are important in counteracting the damage caused to the body by free radicals which play a role in the aging process and in triggering diseases such as arterial disease and cancer. Research has found that darker honeys have higher antioxidant properties.

ANTIBACTERIAL - medical science is rediscovering the effectiveness of honey in the use of alternative therapies in areas where the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (the "superbugs") spreads. Honeys may differ in the potency of its antibacterial activity thus affecting its healing abilities. Some honeys are no more antibacterial than sugar, while others can be diluted more than 100-fold and still halt the growth of bacteria.

The honey that is harvested during winter is best, followed by spring, autumn then summer.
The Sidr honey of Yemen tastes delicious, different from those of other regions because the soil of Yemen is richer and this influences the flavor.
